Vasectomy Reversal FAQ
Common questions about our mini-incision, microsurgical vasectomy reversal procedure — anaesthesia, recovery, success rates, and cost.
The Procedure & Anaesthesia
Are you awake for a vasectomy reversal?
Yes. We specialise in performing vasectomy reversals while the patient is awake using an ultrasound-guided spermatic cord block. Being awake allows for a safer, more cost-effective procedure and enables real-time discussion of surgical findings.
Can you request general anaesthesia?
Yes. General anaesthesia is available for those who prefer to be fully asleep. Total cost: $10,000.
Is the surgery painful?
Most patients describe sensations similar to their original vasectomy. While you may experience some pressure or "tugging," the local anaesthetic ensures that you do not experience sharp pain. Post-operative discomfort typically responds to over-the-counter pain relief and ice.
How do you ensure I don't feel pain during the procedure?
We use an ultrasound-guided spermatic cord block, which uses real-time ultrasound imaging to precisely deliver anaesthetic around the nerves of the spermatic cord. This provides complete pain relief throughout surgery and for several hours afterward.
Is there scientific evidence supporting ultrasound-guided spermatic cord blocks?
Yes. The use of ultrasound-guided blocks is a proven, modern standard for scrotal surgery, supported by peer-reviewed research demonstrating both effectiveness and safety. Birkhäuser FD et al. (2012); Wipfli M et al. (2011).
What is your vasectomy reversal success rate?
As of January 2026, our patency rate is 93%. Patency means successful reopening confirmed by the presence of sperm in a semen analysis. Overall pregnancy rates also depend on partner fertility and the number of years since the original vasectomy.
Booking & Travel
Do I need a referral?
No. Because vasectomy reversal is a private-pay procedure in Alberta, a referral from your family doctor is not required.
How do I book a consult, and how long is the wait time?
We typically see new patients within 1–2 weeks for a consultation. Book online using our consultation form.
How long is the waitlist for the procedure?
We are generally able to book the procedure within 1 to 3 months of the initial consultation. A cancellation list is available for patients who need an earlier date.
Can I travel from Calgary, Edmonton, or BC for the procedure?
Absolutely. We frequently treat patients from across Western Canada. Red Deer is approximately 1 hour 20 minutes from Calgary International Airport (YYC) and 1 hour 15 minutes from Edmonton International Airport (YEG). The address is 4814 50 Street, Red Deer, AB T4N 1X4.
How many days should I stay in Red Deer after surgery?
For out-of-town patients, we recommend staying in Red Deer for at least one night after the procedure. Having someone else drive you home the next day is the safest option.
Recovery & Aftercare
What's the recovery like day by day?
- Day 1: Rest, lie flat, use ice packs (20 minutes on/off).
- Days 2–3: Peak swelling and bruising; light indoor walking only.
- Days 4–7: Desk workers typically return to work.
- Weeks 2–3: Resume light exercise gradually.
- Week 4: Full clearance for strenuous activity.
Full instructions are on our Aftercare page.
How do I reduce swelling and discomfort?
The gold standard for recovery is rest, ice, and support. Wear snug-fitting underwear or an athletic supporter for the first week. Use ice packs for the first 48 hours and take anti-inflammatory medication as directed.
How long do I need off work?
Desk workers typically return within 3–5 days. Physical labour requires approximately 2 weeks off for proper healing at the surgical site.
Costs & Financing
What's included in the fee?
The fee is all-inclusive — it covers the surgery, the surgical facility costs, and the anaesthesia (local or general, depending on your choice). All prices exclude GST (5%) and a 2.4% credit card processing fee applies.
